Confined space

A confined space is any substantially enclosed area where there is a risk of serious injury from hazardous conditions, for example a tank, chamber, pit, sewer or unventilated room. The danger is often not obvious: a lack of oxygen, toxic gases, or the risk of flooding or engulfment can be fatal very quickly.

Work in confined spaces is high risk and tightly controlled. It normally requires a specific risk assessment, a safe system of work, a permit to work, and emergency arrangements in place before anyone enters.
