Method statement

Also known as: Safe system of work

A method statement sets out, step by step, how a task will be carried out safely, using the controls identified in its risk assessment.

A method statement, sometimes called a safe system of work, describes how a specific task will be carried out safely from start to finish. It turns the controls listed in a risk assessment into clear, ordered instructions the team can follow on site.

It is normally paired with a risk assessment as RAMS. Keeping both together and current, linked to the job they belong to, is what makes them useful rather than paperwork filed and forgotten.
