How to make a user an engineer
Main contractors can now mark their own users as engineers. An engineer has an engineer role, and the role decides which credentials (such as CSCS, SSSTS or IPAF) they need. Credentials are managed on the user record and show under the new Credentials and Engineers areas.
- Who it is for
- Your own staff who work on site.
- Where it is set
- Account, then Users, then the user record.
- What drives credentials
- The engineer role, set up in Config Settings.
- Where to see them
- Engineers and Credentials in the sidebar.
Before you start
Before you start, check that:
- Engineer roles and their required credentials exist in Config Settings.
- You can edit users.
- You have credential administrator access, to edit role-required credentials.
- Your company is on the full Sync plan. This is not available on Sync Lite.
Set up engineer roles
In Config Settings, open Engineer roles. Make sure the role is active and has its required credentials.
How to set up engineer roles and credentialsOpen the user
Go to Account, then Users, and select the user, or create a new one.
Mark them as an engineer
Under User details, tick This user is an engineer.
Pick the engineer role
Choose the Engineer role, which is required. If there are no active roles, a message links you to Engineer roles in Config Settings.
Fill in their credentials
The Engineer credentials table lists each credential the role requires, with Expiry date, Status, Document and Edit. Select Edit to set the expiry date and upload the document.
Save the user
Select Save user.
Change the role or unmark
Changing the role, or unticking the box, asks you to confirm first. Any credential changes and uploads in the form are discarded.
Find engineers and credentials
Engineers and Credentials now appear in the sidebar, between Projects and Purchase Orders, for users with permission to view them. Open an engineer to see their credentials.
When a role gains a credential
Adding a required credential to a role in Config Settings adds it to every user engineer with that role.
What you can and cannot do
- Make any user an engineer with a role.
- Manage their credentials, expiry dates and documents on the user record.
- See your engineers and their credentials alongside trade partner engineers.
- Save an engineer without a role.
- Manage credentials for an inactive role.
- Edit role-required credentials without credential administrator access.
- Use engineer features on Sync Lite.
Common issues
Your plan does not support it, for example Sync Lite.
Add or activate a role in Config Settings, under Engineer roles.
The role has no required credentials. Add them in Config Settings if they are needed.
You need credential administrator access.
The role was changed, or the box unticked, before the user was saved.
You do not have permission to view them.
